Reflections on turning your art into a business.
Art is supposed to be fun, but when art turns into work, is it art anymore?
In a way art is work, but when the work doesn't feel like work, does that make it art?
What makes art anyways?
One thing I've always been wary about when starting Mother Disco is it turning into work. Obviously there are unfun things about running a business *taxes, inventory, updating website, emailing, etc.* In a way this year I've found myself subconciously abandoning my baby here. I've essentially been MIA for my busiest season doing other things I love - experiencing new cultures and countries, going to music festivals, celebrating my 30th and my 5 year anniversary with my love, visiting family, trying out new crafts - and honestly my cup is so full.
I've been thinking a lot about how I see Mother Disco changing and evolving as I change and evolve. Mother Disco is a brand, but it is also my creative alter ego. So in a way, it's more than just a brand. It's a space where I can play, and be creative, and show off my silly little outfits and creations to the world. Maybe some pieces will be for sale. Maybe they wont be. Sometimes art is just for yourself. I guess that's the fun thing about being the boss here - I can steer this ship wherever I damn well please.
So all this to say - Hi - I'm back (for now) - and in the spirit of play - here's what I've created recently. Hope you like it. And if not - you just don't get it. And that's okay too. Art is relative. Also, you're wrong.
Me in my sad clown fit for Burning Man this year. Pom Pom Bra, Neck Ruff and Clown hat all a Mother Disco Original.
I also made Caleb's Pasties
